Summary

Memoirs of Sonnenberg, born in 1932 in Grudziadz, Poland; his father was a Polish Jew and his mother was German. Pp. 13-51 deal with the Holocaust period. During 1940-42 the family was interned in a ghetto in Drzewica, near Opoczno. During the liquidation of the ghetto in November 1942, Sven, his mother, and his little sister hid in the forest and then returned to live in the ruins of a building in Drzewica until the liberation. His father, who was supposed to join them in the forest the next day, never appeared and was never heard from again. In 1943 Sonnenberg's mother found work in the kitchen of a unit of the Todt Organization, which helped them survive. She died in 1949 of TB and heart failure. Sonnenberg and his sister remained in communist Poland until 1968; describes the antisemitism in the country which caused them to emigrate to the U.S.
