- After independence in 1948, Sri Lanka enjoyed a booming economy and a liberal parliamentary democracy. Then, in pursuit of power and fundamentalist Buddhism, Sinhalese political leaders and monks hijacked democracy. In response the Tamil Tigers formed and one of modern history's longest civil conflicts resulted. The author observed the conflict at first hand as a UN spokesman in Colombo.
