Summary
In the largest landfill in Latin America, in Garden Gramacho, Duque de Caxias, a metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro, thousands of Brazilians live on rubbish, removing debris from their own survival. Amid a desolate landscape of immense proportions, the garbage collectors try to maintain their routine, recovering from seemingly useless junk objects that turn out to be peculiar instruments of livelihood. How art could be inserted in an environment so inhospitable and, finally, change it to some degree? This question permeates the new book by Vik Muniz, "Special Waste", which appears as witness to the activity of the artist with the scavengers Garden Gramacho. Continuing the record of the work of Vik with workers at the landfill this documentary released in 2009 titled, "Extraordinary Trash" brings, along with over a hundred photos depicting the daily lives of the scavengers and the backstage footage of the works to which they served as models, starting from the processing of remains, their livelihoods, in art. Interspersed with quotes from the hinterlands, Euclides da Cunha, the book tells, in images and texts by Alexei Bueno and Vik's own, the trajectory of these amazing metamorphosis, the dignity of life in a scenario that many would deem hopeless.
