- Summary
- "The Art Gallery of NSW, which already holds one of the world's most extensive collections of Victorian Art presents Victorian Visions, a collection of 45 paintings, watercolours, drawings and sculptures by some of the period's most important artists, including Rossetti, Holman Hunt, Burne-Jones, Leighton, Poynter, Watts and Waterhouse. The Victorian period in art was marked by a fascination with history and (although the modernist age was just around the corner) an obsession with erudition and classical references. Almost as intriguing as the works themselves is the life of the exhibition's patron, Dutch-born Australian businessman and philanthropist John Schaeffer, who jumped ship penniless in 1970s Australia while working as a cabin boy, and whose subsequent financial rises and falls have both been marked by acts of great generosity and grace. His largesse, even during periods of personal financial difficulty, is responsible for many important works now held in the Art Gallery of New South Wales. This privately-acquired collection is known as one of the finest in the world of late-nineteenth century British art."--Publisher's description.
