- Summary
- A detailed study of the process and means by which the destruction of the Jewish community of Berdychiv was carried out by the Nazis. In June 1941, when the German troops occupied the Ukrainian town, the population consisted of ca. 65,000 residents, of whom ca. 20,000 were Jews. During the first four months of occupation, 18,000 of the Jews were murdered. Emphasizes that, unlike most of the Jews in Western Europe, Ukrainian Jews were not interned in ghettos or deported to concentration camps but were murdered in mass executions in the immediate neighborhood of their homes. Relates that Ukrainian collaborators played an important role in the speed and efficiency of the mass murders.
