Summary

Die Abkürzung "Gulag" steht für die 1930 gegründete "Hauptverwaltung der Lager" (Glawnoje Uprawlenije Lagerej), die für die Organisation und Verwaltung der Straflager in der Sowjetunion zuständig war. Mit dem Begriff wird zugleich das System von Lagern bezeichnet, das sich über die gesamte Sowjetunion erstreckte. Insgesamt 20 Millionen Häftlinge mussten dort unter oft extremen Bedingungen Zwangsarbeit leisten. Erstmals zeigt dieser Katalog zahlreiche Dokumente und Relikte aus den sowjetischen Zwangsarbeitslagern, darunter viele aus dem Besitz ehemaliger Häftlinge. Aus ihrer Perspektive werden Geschichte und Erfahrung des Gulag 1929 bis 1956 rekonstruiert. Gleichzeitig wird so die eindrucksvolle Sammlung der Gesellschaft MEMORIAL Moskau zum ersten Mal außerhalb Russlands umfassend präsentiert.
