Summary
"Hollywood often relies on true-life events as a source of inspiration when making movies. Directors, writers, and producers of movies frequently turn to depicting criminals and the crimes they commit as a source for story lines, as they have been, and continue to be, very popular with viewers. Films based on crimes tend to be a source of entertainment for people of all ages. Unfortunately, directors and producers frequently take 'literary license' with the facts, altering the true historical events as a way to make the film more entertaining to viewers. Crime, History, and Hollywood analyzes ten movies that are based on true-life criminal justice events in terms of their accuracy in portraying historical facts and what really happened. Each chapter reviews a movie that is based on an actual event, and then analyzes it in terms of the accuracy of how the events were portrayed. The films include Amistad, Tombstone, September Dawn, Eight Men Out, In Cold Blood, The St. Valentine Day's Massacre, Escape from Alcatraz, Public Enemies, All the President's Men, and Mississippi Burning. Each chapter details mistakes, oversimplification of events, elimination of certain events, any misrepresentation of real life characters, and other aspects of the true historical events. In the end, the book assesses how accurate Hollywood films on criminal justice history really are"--Unedited summary from book cover.
