Summary
This volume asks how medieval cultural representations of nonhuman or partially human creatures, whether literary, visual, religious, or theological, give us new ways to think about gender and embodiment on a broad theoretical spectrum. Contributors explore that question in a range of medieval contexts extending from learned debates to everyday objects of popular culture. Their essays draw on depictions of differently bodied creatures in the Middle Ages to dislodge and reconfigure long-standing views of the body as always human and the human body as merely male or female.
