"With nine discourses and 81 letters (preserved throughout all of Europe), this volume brings to a close the critical publication of the discourses (1563-1568) and political and personal correspondence (1536-1573) of Michel de L'Hospital, which L. Petris began in La plume et la tribune (Droz, 2002). It includes numerous texts hitherto unpublished, notably epistolary exchanges with Henri II, François II, Charles IX, Catherine de' Medici, Pius IV, Nicolas de La Croix, Marguerite of Savoy, Georg Cracow, etc.; the will of Michel de L'Hospital; and writings by Brantôme, Thévet and Turnèbe. These texts reveal both the political activity, aimed toward interdenominational coexistence at the start of the wars of religion, and the intimate musings of the French chancellor, divided between civic engagement and the "back shop" of retreat and letters. Between rhetorical speech, epistolary exchange, the poetic voice of the Carmina and the private writing of autographic notes, this is a major and complex work illuminating the various faces of this gentleman who stood as a champion of peace in 16th century France."--Publisher's website.
