- In 1934, Sinclair ran in the California gubernatorial election as a Democrat. (He was a member of the Socialist Party from 1902 to 1934.) Sinclair's platform, known as the End Poverty in California movement (EPIC), galvanized the support of the Democratic Party, and Sinclair gained its nomination. He was defeated by incumbent Governor Frank F. Merriam. by a sizable margin.
