Summary
Grassy Cove is the largest sinkhole in North America. It is 3 miles wide and 6 miles long. All of the precipitation falling and draining into Grassy Cove flows into Mill Cave and reappears 7 miles to the south to form the headwaters of the Sequatchie River. Dye traces show that water sinking underground in Haley Cove and Bat Town Cove another 4 miles to the north also join into this system. The erosional processes that formed Grassy Cove have created a vast, underground network of cavesthat is still being explored today. Cavers are still discovering new caves and new passageways. They all hope to be the one to find a way into the main Mill Cave Trunk, still mostly inaccessible at this time. The Caves of Grassy Cove is lavishly illustrated with photographs and maps. It begins with the use of these caves by American Indians, continues with saltpeter mining during the War of 1812 and the Civil War, and continues with the current exploration by modern cavers.
