- Summary
- In the early 20th century, the harvesting and processing of the California sardine in Pacific North America became a major industry for both human and non-human consumption. The use of sardines for nonhuman consumption was the most profitable because the whole fish was ground up and processed to produce feed for chickens, fish meal, used in paints, glycerin for explosives, and in salad oils. As a result, floating sardine-reduction plants became common off all the major sardine ports from San Diego to San Francisco.
