- Summary
- Over 50 characters, painted with bright colors and radical distortion of the human figure emphasizing the rigid feature expressionist form part of the exhibition "America-Mexico," artist Agustín Portillo (b. Mexico, 1960). The exhibition is a sample of 50 paintings, done in two series: "America" and "Mexico." The artist stated that a stay in the United States for four years, led him to make "America" (2001), which belong to public collections in the U.S. where he began to observe customs and social behavior of middle and upper classes, festivals and amusements, captured in pictures that appeared in newspapers, magazines and Internet. "My paintings are a poignant chronicle of a sector of the U.S. population, whose attitudes are a true reflection of our era," he said.. After his return to Mexico in 2005, Portillo said he was fascinated by the images of leading figures from politics, business and social appearing in the pages of magazines dedicated to frivolity. Thus, the pictorial adventure that began in Chicago found new ways to Mexican characters the likes of Jose Luis Cuevas, Carlos Monsiváis, Cardinal Norberto Rivera, among others, and that was what motivated him to carry out a social chronicle the privileged class. The first of these two series, was released in the Galeria Oscar Roman, provoking reactions from the public, especially among the characters portrayed.
