Summary
The Autonomous Cretan State was the culmination of many decades of ethno-cultural conflicts and political ferment on the island and is usually studied as the penultimate stage in Crete's long journey towards union with Greece. This course, whose main phases were the result of initiatives taken mainly in Crete and not in Athens, had its own endogenous dynamics. The Cretans, indeed, imposed the Union - or, more precisely, they themselves chose the time and form of the conflicts and rebellions - and decisively influenced the negotiations and the interventions of the Great Powers, who decided each time the compromise solution of each new crisis of "Critical issue", waiting for the next one.
