Summary
"A glance at history reveals that multicultural societies have a tradition. 'Orthodox' Christians, followers of church-critical movements, and Jews lived together in the region between Ulm and the Bodensee (Lake Constance) during the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Era. Even without resident Muslims, the Qur'an and works of the Islamic sciences were reviewed and cited throughout the region. During the 15th century, Ulm was one of the main centers of Jewish society and culture in southern Germany. The Jewish art of manufacturing books in Ulm played a prominent role in medieval Germany. At the center are questions about the religions of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. Approximately eighty regional manuscripts, miniatures, paintings, and sculptures--rare, substantively and artistically prominent--document not only the multifaceted web of relations between these religious groups, but also their reciprocal espousal of forms of cultural expression."--
