- Heroes in Greek myth tend to have strange deaths, random and surprising, which emphasize the fragility of the heroic condition. Few heroes become old, and they often encounter death by ambush, seduced by wicked lovers or cruelly speared by betrayal or hatred. This book collects and analyzes 25 mythic deaths, comparing the different literary versions of each. It also includes a discussion of three classical heroines: Clytemnestra, Cassandra, and Antigone.
