- Summary
- The origin of the collection of French art at Pavlovsk was the trip to Western Europe of Grand Duke Paul and Grand Duchess Maria Fedorovna in the early 1780s. Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette presented them with magnificent works of Sèvres porcelain during their stay in Paris in 1782. The collection has other works from the early decades of porcelain manufacture in France; in all this brief exhibition catalogue displays pieces from fifteen French factories and studios; most of the works are porcelain, but the concluding section publishes five glass vases by the brothers Daum and Emile Gellé. An appendix shows hallmarks. -- Summary written by John W. Emerich, Bronze Horseman Literary Agency.
