Summary
A knight, an inveterate traveler, an indefatigable and passionate supporter of the crusade, a man without borders, a counselor to princes, Philippe de Mézières illustrates a certain idea of Europe. Medieval Europe was the scene of a great diversity of languages and political interests that precluded unity. Facing attacks from the Infidels, threatened by wars and epidemics, Christendom charted its anxieties, and tapped new and unexpected resources in order to bring about its redemption and salvation. For Mézières, Europe was a kaleidoscope whose treacheries and quarrels he denounced; but beyond this bitter realization he wanted to believe in a fresh breath that could begin to move this great disunited body toward a future unity. --
