Summary
"Educational provision and development in Kenya over the years, has been beset by challenges of inadequate supply. While a greater majority ofKenyans have sought access to various levels of education for purposes of economic and social mobility, social class, region and gender, have often worked either singularly or in combination to determine who goes to school, the various levels of exit and the quality of learning achieved. Analyzing these challenges and their manifestation has preoccupied educational practitioners and policy makers over the years. This book goes back to examining modes of traditional education that existed in Kenya before the establishment of modern Western formal education. By taking historical reflection, the authors show how the singular concern of Western education with laying the conditions for capitalist penetration in the colony, eroded the nature of holistic education that existed in pre-colonial Kenya, thereby planting the seeds of unending inequalities in educational provision along the lines of region, gender and overall policy formulation and implementation"--back cover.
