Summary
"Tennessee provided nearly 187,000 men to the Confederate armies ... The vast majority of these men served in either the Army of Tennessee or the Army of Mississippi ... While the majority of the Tennessee troops fought in the Western theater, three regiments served the entire war in the Army of Northern Virginia and would be joined by other Tennessee regiments in 1864 ... Tennessee was the last state to leave the Union and the first state to return; yet the state still suffered through the difficulties of a Reconstruction plan administered by a particularly vindictive Tennessee Unionist in the form of Gov. William G. Brownlow. When Tennessee's Confederates returned home, they found their state transformed in their absence. Continual campaigning, Union occupation, and violent guerrilla warfare left the state in ruins, and the Union victory and Reconstruction freed slaves and upturned the prewar social, economic, and political order. Returning soldiers struggled to reestablish their lives and process their experiences ... This volume only begins to tell the story of these men"--Page 8.
