Summary
This report presents new inventory management techniques to help the Marine Corps continue to improve logistics and repair processes. The authors advocate two modern computational methods--"bootstrapping the ROP" and "dollar banding"--and demonstrate via simulations that these new tools lead to dramatically improved supply system performance for the Marine Corps. In particular, using actual data from a Marine Expeditionary Force General Account, they show significant improvements in all supply system performance metrics; they also demonstrate the benefit of reducing order and ship times for the Marines. The improvements result not only in more fiscally efficient operation, but also in better delivery of retail supply to the ultimate user--the Marine warfighter. The results are broadly applicable across the Marine Corps, the other military services, and the civilian business sector
