Summary Tape File (STF) 4C provides summary statistics on population and housing characteristics produced from the 1980 census. This extract of STF 4C provides data for Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas (SMSAs) and urbanized areas. Population items tabulated for each area include demographic data such as age, race, sex, marital status, and Spanish origin, plus information on schooling, employment status, children, occupation, and income. Housing items include data on size and condition of the housing unit as well as information on value, age, water, sewage and heating, vehicles, and monthly owner costs.

This file is sorted by level of geographic hierarchy, and individual records may be repeated at different geographic levels. Each ''logical record'' in the dataset consists of 44 record segments (''physical records'') of 1,956 characters each. The data are written in the form of tables that do not necessarily correspond to the physical record divisions in the file.
