Summary
On January 22, 2003, a major earthquake (magnitude of 7.8) occurred near the city of Colima (Mexico). The earthquake lasted for approximately 45 seconds. Twenty-nine people were killed (and more than 300 injured) causing a large amount of damage to the architecture and urban structure of the city. Soon after almost 11 thousand houses were studied and classified in two major categories: for their structural system and for their level of damage. The present book offers a study of the vulnerability of the residential architecture constructed in the end of the 19th century and early decades of the 20th century in the historic downtown of the city. The author analyzed, classified and established correlation of 42 cases that have in common their capacity to resist the 5 most severe earthquakes of the region in the last 100 years.
