Summary
Normandy. World War II. A French family of four is sound asleep. All seemed routine. But for Genevieve Duboscq, a girl of not yet twelve, Claude, her four-year-old brother, and her parents, the night of June 5, 1944, would become their longest night. A night they would never forget. One American paratrooper -- like a Martian -- appeared at the Duboscqs' doorstep, jolting the family out of their sleep. Two more followed, and within minutes several dozen other battered young men were filling the small house that instantly became an emergency shelter.
