Summary
"Change and continuity in gender relations in a rapidly developing society is the main theme of this book. The author has undertaken two periods of fieldwork in Kelantan, an Islamic stronghold in Malaysia, the first in 1965 and the second more than twenty years later. The purpose of the follow-up study was to investigate the change in gender relations especially concerning the women who, in 1965, owned, inherited, bought and sold land, dominated the bazaar market and held a firm grip on family economy and family politics. The book offers an important methodological and theoretical contribution to the study of gender relations and the construction of personhood in a complex and changing society."--Jacket.
