- Summary
- States that the establishment of ghettos and Jewish quarters in Tuscany in the 16th century was parallel to the policy of segregation of Jews initiated by the Papal States. This policy resulted from the exacerbation of the conflict between the Church and the Reformation movement. Ghettos were established in Firenze and Siena; Jewish quarters, more diffuse places of residence, were established in Livorno and Pisa, according to political or economic needs. The establishment of the ghetto signified that, for the first time, the Jews were segregated from the rest of the population.
