Un viaggio lungo un secolo che inizia a fine Ottocento, quando la città perde il ruolo di capitale e si reinventa centro di produzione industriale, e dalle valli montane e dalle campagne piemontesi arriva il primo dei tanti flussi di persone alla ricerca di lavoro e di una vita migliore. In seguito, nel periodo delle due guerre mondiali, Torino si distingue nella mobilitazione bellica: dalle sue fabbriche usciranno proiettili, mezzi d'assalto, paracaduti e armi, anche grazie allo sforzo degli immigrati e delle donne che prenderanno il posto degli uomini impegnati al fronte. E poi la grande pagina della città-fabbrica, quando Torino sembra voler dire solo FIAT, e migliaia di persone saltano sui treni del sole per indossare le tute blu della fabbrica del Lingotto. Torino deve fare i conti con l'emergenza abitativa e l'adeguamento dei servizi, e deve imparare a convivere con i 'nuovi cittadini,' in un processo d'integrazione che sarà lento e spesso sofferto da entrambe le parti, come nell'emblematico caso di Orbassano, che negli anni Cinquanta viene eletto a 'dormitorio di periferia' e vede aumentare la sua popolazione di quattro volte. With the extraordinary images of the ANSA archives and the words of a great historian, the tale of immigration in Turin is presented. A journey of a hundred that began in the late nineteenth century, when the city lost its role as a capital and reinvented the industrial production center, and the first of the many streams of people came looking for work and a better life from the mountain valleys and the Piedmontese countryside. Later, in the period of the two world wars, Turin distinguished itself in warfare: bullets, assault rifles, parachutes and weapons were released from its factories, thanks also to the efforts of immigrants and women who took the place of men engaged in the front. And then came the era of the city-factory, when Turin seemed to mean only FIAT, and thousands of people jumped to wear the blue lingotti factory outfits. Turin had to deal with housing emergencies and service adaptation, and had to learn to live with "new citizens" in a process of integration that was slow and often suffered by both parties (as in the emblematic case of Orbassano, who in the 1950s elected to create "suburban dormitories" and saw its population increasing four times). The end of the trip is "today's" immigration from countries torn apart by wars and poverty, which have nothing more to offer to those who risk life to reach Italy. Supported by rigorous document research and an easy-to-read essay that helps us understand (if we still need it) "we are all children of migrations."
