Summary
Examines the national thinking and self-comprehension of German pupils as expressed in school compositions written between 1914-45. States that the compositions had a double purpose: they served as conduits for the thoughts, fantasies, and sensations of the pupils on the one hand, and as an instrument for measuring the influence of the teachers on the other. Reveals confessions of "Deutschtum" already in 1914, and the use of instruction in German literature as an instrument for political socialization and indoctrination. A distinct change occurred in 1933, reflecting unprecedented national pride, which did not appear by chance, but was an instrument of the Third Reich, used to diffuse its antisemitic propaganda. Pp. 55-374 present excerpts from 233 compositions found in school archives or in personal collections, with the author's comments.
