Summary
  • Reaching far beyond its cow-country beginnings, the poetry of the cowboy West is awakening a response in mainstream America. In our restless, confused society, there is a yearning for a connection to the land; for the sound of the human voice; for simple, natural truth. This anthology, accompanied by photographic portraits of twelve remarkable personalities, celebrates the cowboy poets who make up this book. Among them, Wally McRae, a third-generation rancher from Forsyth, Montana; Paul Zarzyski, a former bronc rider with a master's degree in literature; and Linda Hussa, a woman buckaroo who ranches with her husband in the remote "sagebrush corner" of northeastern California.
  • Profiles of poets complement the photographs and acquaint us with a diverse tradition tied to the rhythms of land, animals, and seasons. With honest emotion, eloquence, and wit, these poems ride free over the range of human experience. At the same time, they render the textures of a uniquely enduring way of life, becoming more endangered by the pressures of modern times. As Wally McRae says, "We are heroes. We write understandable and entertaining material. And we live and work in the last best place."
