- "The research efforts presented in this volume enable the delineation of the Avaldsnes' history into three phases. During the first phase, sea kings used Avaldsnes as a base for dominating the islands and waters along the coastal sailing route. Around AD 900, one of the sea kings rose to become a land king, the first King of Norway, ushering in the second phase. The third phase began around AD 1400, when the manor became the rectory for the vicar St. Olafr Church, as it has since remained."--Page vii.
