- Summary
- "This book paints a picture of the early settlers of the Genesee Country who were among the first wave of migrants moving westward after the Revolutionary War. Author Marian Henry begins with families enumerated in the 1790 Federal Census and links these first settlers of present-day Steuben County to their eastern origins -- usually New England, Pennsylvania, or New Jersey. The sketches cover the Erwin family, who originated in Ireland and settled in what was then Ontario County; the Lindsley family; the Canisteo Associates, who had moved to Pennsylvania as part of the Susquehanna Company; and the Corning Proprietors, some of whom had Irish and German roots and who settled in Painted Post (present-day Corning). Each sketch aims to document the following: head of household and his parents; his spouse(s) and her/their parents; their children; the children's spouses; parents of children's spouses"--Back cover.
