Summary
In Sweden in the eighteenth century, a handful of passionate scientists developed the first tools for counting the population. Encouraged by the power in place, they created the Royal Academy of Sciences, and the very first statistical institute in the world. These enthusiastic scholars, and the most prolific of them, Pehr Wargentin, led for decades pioneering work in demography and statistics. Sweden was indeed the first country to aspire to paint the picture of its entire population in the long term. It is also a pioneer in data collection, ancestor of future censuses. From these innovative tools, Wargentin established the very first life tables, but was also a great visionary. He imagined the very first models, always used in demography, age pyramid, or household unit, was the first to analyze the seasonality of births and the importance of migration ... The book traces this great adventure to through a series of memoirs never translated into French, thus making an essential contribution to the history of the sciences of the population. A rich introduction completes this contribution by placing it both in its historical context and by emphasizing the not only scientific role of these scientists, but also their political weight. Somewhat obscured by their famous colleagues Halley, Linnaeus or Celsius in the history of science, these little-known scientists find here the place that is due to them.--Cover page 4 (by Google translate)
