- Cet ouvrage est publié à l'occasion de l'exposition éponyme présentée à la galerie Boulakia, Paris, du 19 octobre au 7 décembre 2017.00Pionnier, dès 1915, de l'art abstrait, Alberto Magnelli revient, à partir de 1920, après le tourbillon coloré des Explosions lyriques de 1918-1919 qui marque la fin de la Première Guerre mondiale, à une autre approche de la peinture qui, si elle peut sembler plus classique avec ses personnages ou ses paysages, n'en est pas moins - comme le dira lui-même Magnelli - une peinture inventée. Ces dix années, les dernières qu'il va vivre en Italie avant de fuir la montée du fascisme, seront celles où il va rechercher comment inventer une peinture moderne qui retrouve la force et la sobriété des oeuvres anciennes qui, de Giotto à Piero Della Francesca, feront de lui, à son tour, l'un de ces rigoureux constructeurs de la forme et de l'espace géométrique.
- "A pioneer of abstract art starting in 1915, Alberto Magnelli created the whirlwind of color that was the series Explosions Lyriques from 1918-1919, amid postwar exuberance. Immediately thereafter, he began to formulate a new approach to painting that, while it might seem more classic in terms of its subjects or landscapes, was nevertheless - as Magnelli defined it himself - a peinture inventée. Over the course of the decade, the last he would live in Italy before fleeing the rise of fascism, he would strive to invent a style of resolutely modern painting that would nevertheless incorporate the force and sobriety of the works of the Renaissance artists from Giotto to Piero della Francesca. These efforts would lead to his becoming a rigorous creator of geometric abstraction." -- Back cover.
