"As early as the first half of the 16th century, the Portuguese introduced sugar mills (engenhos) to Brazil, mainly in Pernambuco, Bahia, and Rio de Janeiro. A relevant chapter of Brazilian architecture was written on the mansions and chapels of the engenhos, particularly throughout the 19th century. This encompassing study was long overdue. Includes many color photographs and text in Portuguese and English"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58.
