Summary
Alciphron, a Greek rhetorician, was probably a contemporary of Lucian (2nd century A.D.). He was the author of a collection of fictitious letters, of which 124 (118 complete and 6 fragments) have been published; they are written in the purest Attic dialect and are considered models of style. Alciphron probably wrote in imitation of Lucian, purporting to describe conditions in the 4th-3rd century B.C. He framed his work in the guise of letters from wastrels, rogues, sailors, gamblers, thieves, spurned wives, willful young girls, prostitutes, and parasites. The "courtesan" letters with their decadent eroticism are especially interesting.
