Summary
"Published on the occasion of the first complete retrospective on the work of Osvaldo Borsani (1911-1985), the monograph presents the figure and work of the famous architect, artist, designer and entrepreneur. Osvaldo Borsani was one of the pioneers of the union of craftsmanship and industry, aesthetics and engineering. Through more than 300 works, from unique pieces to industrial products, archive documents, furnishings and original sketches, fifty emblematic years of his activity are told, from the modernization of stylish furniture in the Atelier of Varedo to the creation of Tecno, a company founded by Osvaldo and Fulgenzio Borsani under the banner of "téchne", the science of knowing how to do. Osvaldo Borsani's activity is part of a decisive moment in the history of Italian design: the conjunction of an economic boom, technological progress and a flourishing development of the arts. The theme of collaborations has been crucial and recurrent in Borsani's life; starting from the student's beginning at the Polytechnic of Milan up to Tecno's experience. Since the 1930s, Osvaldo Borsani has collaborated with some artist friends on interior design projects, working with figures such as Lucio Fontana, Roberto Crippa, Aligi Sassu, Fausto Melotti and Arnaldo Pomodoro. With his twin brother Fulgenzio, Borsani, starting from the paternal furniture company, the AB Atelier Borsani Varedo, gave birth, in 1953, Tecno, which quickly established itself as one of the main Italian design companies. Osvaldo's daughter and son-in-law, Valeria and Marco Fantoni, both architects and designers, worked closely with him until 1985, the year of his death. Today, it is his nephew, Tommaso Fantoni, who preserves the history of the family through the direction of the Archive.
