Summary

This volume emphasizes the use of large-scale field experiments and laboratory facilities in the European Community, Japan, and the United States for understanding the dynamics of coastal processes. Ninety-two papers report findings from multi-investigator research programs and experiments, including Supertank, DELILAH, Duck'94, and in particular, MAST. In addition, the book introduces a number of past field experiments that have been carried out in the former Soviet bloc countries, primarily Bulgaria, East Germany, Poland, and Russia. Invited and submitted papers cover wave motion in vegetated and non-vegetated coastal zone; surf zone modeling; planform considerations of beach nourishment; swash dynamics, runup, and low-frequency motion; longshore currents; cross-shore transport and profile evolution; and more.
