Summary
The up-and-down life of a boy who enrolled as a soldier in the Civil War. Starting on the Union side, Willis Carr, 13, is captured and given the choice of execution or joining the Confederacy. He joins, only to desert, is recaptured and sent to be a guard in a prison. Finally he gets something out of the war, a slave teaches him to read and write.
