- Summary
- Despite, or perhaps because of, the brutal conditions of life and the abundance of death, there was, in the Jewish ghettos of Nazi Europe, a widespread thirst for literature. Ch. 1 discusses the Jewish libraries in existence on the eve of destruction. Ch. 2 relates the conditions of life in the ghettos. Chs. 3-7 (pp. 55-134) describe the libraries in the ghettos of Warsaw, Lodz, Kovno, Vilna, and Theresienstadt. Gives details, such as the number of books in the various libraries, the names of the librarians, the types of books in the collections, the readers and their preferences, and the vicissitudes of maintaining the libraries in dire conditions.
