Summary
Information is the first step in the acquisition of knowledge and forms the basis for all education, currently the primary means to prevent the spread of HIV infection. However, information access to the vast array of HIV/AIDS resources available in both traditional and nontraditional formats can be confusing and intimidating. Huber, whose educational background and training is library and information science, first provides a theoretical approach to the nature of information and the provision of HIV/AIDS services, with practical examples throughout for illustration. He next examines resources presently available, including library programs focusing on HIV/AIDS, specialized electronic sources, and information networks between AIDS service organizations, community-based organizations, and national organizations. The material on electronic resources, including the Internet, will be particularly useful to readers with limited knowledge of computer technologies. Although the book is not designed to serve as a comprehensive information resource, it does provide a well-organized introduction to HIV/AIDS information services that will be useful to those affected by HIV disease, health care practitioners, librarians, and other information professionals. Appropriate for all libraries and an excellent reference resource. American Library Association.
