- Summary
- This exhibition seeks to discuss the costs of the withdrawal of democratic rights for the country's cultural imaginary, in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the enforcement of the Ato Institucional Número Cinco AI-5 (Institutional Act Number Five), a milestone in the aggravation of the totalitarianism of the Brazilian civil-military dictatorship (1964-1985) and the artistic and cultural production of the period, with artworks, ideas and initiatives that were born in tension with the interdiction of political opinion, which virtually criminalized through practices of censorship and repression. In some cases the assembled works were forbidden, destroyed or subsisted in hiding; in others, their circulation was seriously restrained and their modes of expression went through coding and tactics of resistance. The event included the participation from artists, cinematographers, authors and more than a dozen researchers and art critics who collaborated at the invitation of curator Paulo Miyada.
