- Summary
- Women’s nature, moral growth, and proper social role have been subjects more intensely debated during some periods in history than others. Considering the nineteenth-century “querelle des femmes” in its social context, Carolyn Longue asks why the dispute was so widespread and intense. To discover the answer, she analyzes the writings of the time the activities of women upon which contemporary commentators focused, and the Maison royale de Saint Louis at Saint-Cyr, an institution that embodied opposition to public roles for women. She finds that the controversy was stirred by women’s participation in and leadership of the salons that multiplied in Paris and in provincial centers from the first half of the century. -- Provided by publisher
