- Summary
- Seghers (née Netty Reiling) was born in 1900 in Mainz and died in 1983 in Berlin. Examines the influence of Seghers' rupture with Judaism and her turn to communism at the age of 26 on her writings, especially on her work in exile, e.g. "Das siebte Kreuz", "Transit", and "Der Ausflug der toten Mädchen". States that her writing is characterized by a general neglect and repression of Jewish themes, disregard of the antisemitism of the Weimar period, and avoidance of coping with the Holocaust. Claims that the rupture with her Jewish background served as a precondition for her decision to live and write as a communist, and involved denial and repression of anything Jewish. This rejection became a component of her self-concept, even to the extent of Jewish self-hatred. She left Germany in 1933 (for Paris), and in 1941 she fled to Mexico; the history and suffering of the Jews was part of her own biography. Her mother was deported and murdered in 1943. Thus, her work cannot be evaluated fully without consideration of this aspect of her life.
