- Summary
- Some 200,000 people from 200 nations live in Basel in the early 2020s. The city is the centre of a large tri-national region. Yet how did Basel become what it is today? This publication offers a concise overview of the events and developments that have shaped the city and the region. Both noteworthy and everyday objects guide us through its history - beginning with the earliest human traces up to objects of the present time. City views, maps, models and numerous historical photographs visualise the rapid transformation that started in the 1850s. Contemporary history is examined on the basis of six themes: the relations between the two Basel cantons, immigration and migration, the role of the pharma industry, or handling space and nature. The richly illustrated book offers a wide readership an immediate and clear access to Basel history. -- (from back cover)
