- Summary
- "Nigeria has for too long remained a laggard in industrial competitiveness. But how long will this persist? National competitiveness is increasingly tough for countries that are unable to reform fast and take advantage of the emerging technological opportunities. Nigeria's renewed industrialisation efforts through the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP) and the Nigerian Industrial Revolution Plan (NIRP) are commendable but require thorough insights into how manufacturing competitiveness can be stimulated and sustained in spite of the difficult business environment faced by Nigerian manufacturing firms. Manufacturing firms are major sources of innovation and productivity increases required for fostering industrial competitiveness that translates into national competitiveness. Firms learn to compete, and this is often achieved through export participation by firms. Are Nigerian manufacturing firms learning to compete? Does learning by exporting advance the competitive performance of Nigerian manufacturing firms? How can learning by exporting help in removing the constraints on manufacturing competitiveness? This book examines these pertinent questions using quantitative and qualitative analytical frameworks, and provides case studies that further clarify the findings from the quantitative analysis. The questions are well-researched, and the research findings offer the necessary insights that make a compelling case for an economic management approach that strongly focus on addressing Nigeria's production challenges while at the same time maintaining macroeconomic stability."--Cover page 4.
