Summary
"Betty Rosenfeld (Stuttgart, March 23, 1907–Auschwitz, 1942) grew up in a liberal-religious home. Even in her youth, which she spent with the ‘German-Jewish Hiking Association Comrades’ and the ‘Democratic Youth’, she was inspired by high ideals. As a teenager, she admired Walter Rathenau. At the ‘Marxist Workers' School’ in Stuttgart, she attended classes taught by Friedrich Wolf and Kurt Hager. After all, she types leaflets against the new rulers in Berlin for the communist underground in Stuttgart. In contrast to other socialists with Jewish roots, however, she carries the Jewish calendar in her heart and never leaves her religious community. She emigrated to Palestine, where she missed the anti-fascist impulse and like-minded people with whom she fought for ‘the cause’. Alongside photojournalist Gerda Taro, she will soon be the only woman from Stuttgart to risk her life for the Second Spanish Republic. After her voluntary work in the medical service of the international brigades, an odyssey of several years begins as an unwanted refugee through France, which in the end leads to her extradition, deportation and murder. Now it is time to publish her commitment to freedom in book form to a wider audience and to honor her tragic fate. With critical sympathy, Michael Uhl follows Betty Rosenfeld through all stages of life and draws the moving portrait of an unusual and courageous woman on a broad basis of sources and in a simple narrative style” --
