Summary
"This is a book that aims to outline a general overview of the Mithraic documents distributed throughout the Roman Empire. The main objective has been the compilation of its material evidence, both with regard to inscriptions and with regard to the temples of which evidence remains or remained. An attempt has been made to give as complete an image as possible of the interior structure of the mithraeum, which is why, whenever it has been possible to find or draw it, its plan appears alongside the description. Therefore, this book has been conceived from a not only documentary but also a visual perspective. From the images it is possible to have an approximate idea of its dimensions, position of stairs, apses, benches, etc., and even its level of destruction. In its plans you can see the models of the temples of Mithras, but its decoration makes the difference. There are various models of mithraeans: the oriental ones, which are enigmatic, strange and beautiful; The temples of central and eastern Europe are not so mysterious, but they have great strength; The mithraeums located within the cities are found in public temples housed in buildings such as circuses, military barracks, domus , etc.; The wooden mithraeums are typical of border areas and their main characteristic was their mobility; The open-air mithraeums are special because, in addition to having the bas-reliefs in the rock, they are surrounded by lush nature that surrounds them and, finally, some temples on the Italian peninsula, which are delicate and expressive and the color of the Fresco paintings of his bullockonies are beautiful. But it must be noted that the greatest exponent of Mithraism is the tauroctony or sacrifice of the bull, in this book many of them are shown in profusion and it is shown that each tauroctony is different; the oriental ones envelop the observer with their pictorial beauty and their perfectly chiseled sculptures (Sidon); those from central Europe impress with their greatness and power; those of Italy for their delicacy, for their pictorial chromaticism and for their details. But all the tauroctonies, for one reason or another, permeate whoever stands in front of them, I invite you to check it out. This is the only book that collects all the temples of the god Mithras in the Roman Empire to date"--Publisher's website viewed February 12, 2024.
