From materials in the Ottoman archives Prof. Güllüdağ brings us the sad and touching life story of Vambery Armin who traveled around Central Asia as a dervish under the name of Reşid Efendi, went to places such as Bukhara and Samarkand where no European had set foot before him, a man who was an explorer, professor, writer, ethnographer, spy, philologist, orientalist, friend to the Turks and mediator between Great Britain and the Ottoman state. Of Turkish-Hungarian ancestry, he was a Muslim in Turkey, a Christian in England, and a Jew in Hungary.
