- Summary
- The municipality of Autlán de Navarro (also known as Autlán de la Grana) keeps an important history of commercial production of grana cochineal since the 16th century. Very particular colors ranging from red to purple are the result of the cultivation of the tiny insect in combination with the cactus stalk and are used by artists and artisans to create masterpieces since pre-Columbian times. This research recalls the of the use of grana cochineal, one of the native colorants of Mexico, in textiles and plastic arts and their religious connotations and the use of the color red as a symbol of power and ostentation during the 19th century. Likewise, it glimpses the future of grana cochineal in Autlán de Navarro despite the vicissitudes that it has historically had to go through as an artisanal process in competition with industrialized production.
