- Summary
- The genesis of Critical Race Theory (CRT) did not derive from Fox News or conservative hot takes from right-wing media. In this text, scholars and activists come together to clap back on the lies that animated attacks at local school boards and the January 6, 2021 insurrection at the U.S. capitol. Like a hip-hop dee-jay, CRT samples radical histories predating slavery and the Middle Passage before "the point of no return" and remixes these moments to better understand our present time. Editors Walter Greason and Danian Jerry lift the evidence and perspectives provided by emerging leaders to cut through the white noise defining CRT and dismantling the falsehoods promoted by its opponents. Comparable to Nas's Illmatic, Illmatic Consequences disrupts traditional non-fiction writing by designing the text like a hip-hop concept album by blending African American orality and written traditions. Illmatic Consequences explains CRT, its purpose, and why Black and White students can benefit form the scholarship. Inspired by the work of David Roediger, Eduardo Bonilla-Silva, Nikole Hannah-Jones, Ibram Kendi, and Carol Anderson, Illmatic Consequences stretches the vision and lexicon of Nasir Jones to a new generation of artists. Stacey Robinson's surrealist depictions of these sonic legacies has already inspired the worldwide expansion of the Black Speculative Arts Movement. Readers of this text will become the vanguard of a global society dedicated to freedom, justice, and decolonization.
